Can we fix it? Yes, we can!

I just love that man of mine.......
Last week, Kaelan and Daddy decided it was time to freshen up the fence and playscape with at new dose of wood stain. Kaelan was determined to help and was always right on Daddy's heels with a tool of some sort in hand. When it came time for the actual staining, I could see the apprehension in dad's face when Kaelan whipped out a paintbrush and looked up with anticipation. Dad called to the house and asked me to bring out a bucket of warm water.
"Why do you need this water?",I asked as I carried the bucket out onto the patio.
"Kaelan is ready to help me stain", he said as he approached me with his back blocking her view.
Before I could get my "Oh,I don't think that is a good idea..." out of my mouth, he stopped me with a shushing glance.
"Let me just get her a bucket and brush of her own ready so she can get going."
With his body still blocking her view, he reached up to take the warm water and winked at me as he secretly dropped in a handful of dirt and red clay. He quickly gave the water a stir with the brush, and Walla......little handy girl "stain".
I smiled as the two set off to work....dad staining, and Kaelan following along with her watery mix....believing she too, was staining.

Oh, how I love that man of mine.

Keepin' Austin Fun....

In keeping with our Dr. Seuss theme:

"Oh the Places You Can Go...........on a Saturday in Austin!"

Austin Kite Festival

Visiting our "friend" (ha,ha) Rick Perry at the Capital.

Joe McDermott Concert at F.U.M.P Music Festival

**On a side note, I must tell you that Kaelan shocked us at this concert. We all know Kaelan is a longtime "groupie" of Joe McDermott's. Strangely, Kaelan joined the other children in the kiddy mosh pit and stood absolutely still and emotionless as the other kids went crazy around her. For the first time, she did not sing or dance or wave her cigerette lighter in the air.......she just stood and stared blankly at Joe. At one point, Joe pointed at her and then shrugged his shoulders and laughed in a curious chuckle......what was her deal? I wondered if maybe she wasn't feeling well....but after checking her over and coming up empty, I came to realize that Kaelan had just reached a rut in her road of fanhood. I know where she is in the process.....for much of the teenage years, I breathed, ate and lived "The Cure".....and then came that fateful day. The posters came down, the deathly dark eye make-up washed away, and the love simply faded.....Let us hope Kaelan is just a crossroad.....on the way home, all Kaelan wanted to hear was J.D. - Time will tell.

Jamming with the Biscuit Brothers

And Oh the Places we've yet to go...........

Ode to Dr. Seuss

In the whimsical world of beloved Dr. Seuss
Live an elephant (faithful), a big-hearted moose,
And creatures, the wildest that you ever saw,
A grinch with a heart that's three sizes too small,
A bustard, a lorax (he speaks for the trees),
And prejudiced sneetches, with stars, if you please;
There are five hundred hats and a cat who wears one,
A circus and zoo that are oodles of fun,
And oobleck (be careful for what things you wish),
Green eggs (you will like them) and colorful fish,
And wonderful places like Solla Sollew,
All dreamt by the Doctor for dreamers like you.

Happy Birthday to You, Dr. Seuss!

BYOB

The other night, we packed up the family (as well as the friends from the 'hood) in our van for a trip down to South Austin. After weeks of hard work, Kaelan had filled the sticker chart and was ready to claim her big prize. Her choice of blue ribbon? Well, since way long ago when Kaelan was old enough to spy interesting scenery from the backseat window, she has longingly wished to stop at Peter Pan Putt Putt. You see, Peter Pan Putt Putt or 4P (to save my typing fingers) has huge, statue figurines that peer out over the main street, calling small children to come inside and see what awaits. One of those figures is a huge T-Rex, so during Kaelan's dino obsession days, she would beg us to stop and take her putt putting. We knew taking a two year old to putt putt would be a mistake, so we informed her that she would have to wait until she was a little older (and less dangerous with a club) to visit 4P.

Well....the time and occasion finally arrived, and her wish came true.

It wasn't until I started researching the place to make arrangements, that I realized 4P is not your average family putt putt pit stop. For one, the place has remained in virtually the same state of architecture for over 30 years. I mean THE SAME for over 30 years. Secondly, the nostalgia of the joint is what brings people, primarily college age people in and keeps the place afloat.

That's all cool with me....sounds very "Austinish".

But perhaps the most interesting fact, was finding out 4P is BYOB!!! That's right! You can load up a cooler and drag it along as you navigate your way through 18 holes of wavy, bumpy, curvy courses!

I didn't tell Kaelan and Darian about the BYOB, and after much deliberation on whether or not this was the best place to take small children, I agreed to go through with fulfilling Kaelan's sticker chart wish.
I pretended to take a picture of Kaelan and Doug so I could get one of the dude checking us in...arm guard and leopard print head-band all in the name of style....I will also mention he and his buds were jamming on the bongo drums when we arrived....yep, very "Austinish".

The characters were crazy looking things that kind-of resembled popular creatures from books and shows. Here, the kids pose with "Clifford The Big Red Dog".....or "Red Poodle With The Creepy Long Neck", as I called him.

We hit some balls, lost some balls, chased some kids....all good fun!

This is how I think the place looks for most of the "golfers" there.....you know, BYOB!

So....if you are looking for a great place to drink, fall down, have fun and with PLENTY of holes to puke in, this is your place!
I kid.....we had fun, the kids had a blast, and when she fills her next behavior chart, we are off to putt the other 18 holes!
4P= *** out of ****
