Frogger

A few nights back, Kaelan decided she would "mow" the lawn with her bubble mower. It was a decently cool evening, so Doug and I agreed to let her do her thing and sit out on the porch while she slaved away. A few laps into mowing, Kaelan gave a sudden jolt and looked at us with a most puzzling face. I watched as she bent down several times and eyed the bottom part of the mower. Finally, she called out, "Mom, my mower is stuck on somping!" Figuring she had probably run over a rock, I told her to just pick up the 2lb machine she was handling and continue on. "Oh," she said, as if that had not occurred to her to be an option. She bowed her knees and and made a face often made by pro wrestlers when they lift their opponents over there heads for a great body slam and prepared to lift the mower off the obstacle. Suddenly, she let out a horrendous scream and flew backwards a few feet. I jumped up and began running towards her afraid that this toy mower had somehow taken on the life of "Lawnmower Man" or something, and was attacking my child. Much to my surprise, and even more to Kaelan's, a HUGE frog came leaping out from beneath the mower. Bubble juice slimed down his back, and he looked a little agitated, but overall he was in good shape for having just been pinned by a mower. Kaelan was surprised and thrilled, and she spent the rest of the evening hopping around after the critter.
Since that night, we have had several froggy friends come to visit, so it has become a night time ritual to go frog hunting. We hope our frog friends never meet our lawn dude's mower....no bubble juice in there!

Luau

Yep, I am all about the montage thing......
A few weeks ago, we hosted a luau party here at the house. We had a great time....I think we have created another yearly tradition!
Kaelan had a blast with all her friends playing in the sand, the pool, on the playscape, making leis and even busting the luau pinata (we are from New Mexico....we had to have a pinata). The grown-ups were successful at making complete fools of themselves with a hula-hoop contest, doing the limbo, and water balloon tossing. Doug made some awesome food....I helped with cutting and cooking, but he did most of the work! Enjoy the photos....

This is for all you haters....

I am going to order this sign to hang in front of my home.....and beside it I will post the words:
NO BIRDS WELCOME! DO NOT BUILD YOUR NEST OR LAY YOUR EGGS ON MY PROPERTY! I DO NOT WANT THE DRAMA!

Well, that is all fine and good for future reference, but presently, we are once again in the middle of a bird soap opera. It seems another sweet little birdie has decided to make a home for her sweet little babies in my yard. This bird picked one of my hanging flower baskets on the front porch. I actually saw a bird flying into the basket a few days ago with what appeared to be some string. I immediately flew out the door and yelled for the bird to go away...."Oh no you don't!', I screamed. "Don't you dare build a nest in there! Don't you birds talk to one another? Don't you know this is a sacred burial area from another bird family?"
I figured I had scared her away, but it wasn't until I went to water the baskets and I saw a freshly broken egg on the ground below that I realized there WAS a nest in there. Darn those blasted birds......my heart is still aching for the last nest drama.
Well, there was one egg left in the nest last night, and I worried the mama would never return after all that moving the basket around. However, much to my surprise, I saw the mom fluttering about the flowers today and when I took a peek....there were TWO eggs in the nest! I am praying that stupid possum will not be able to scale the pillars and murder them. I am thinking for surrounding the area with barbed wire and hiring snipers.

Clay Aiken Impregnates Someone!
Posted May 29th 2008 4:00PM by TMZ Staff
TMZ has learned Clay Aiken is going to be a daddy. In case you didn't process that, Clay Aiken is going to be a daddy. Here's what we know. Multiple sources tell us the mother is Jaymes Foster, a record producer and Clay's best friend. He lives at her home when he's in L.A.We're told 50-year-old Foster, who produced several Aiken CDs, is due in August. She's the sister of record mogul David Foster. She divorced a few years back and has no kids. Aiken is 29.We're told Foster was artificially inseminated. But Clay is a lot more than sperm -- we're told he will have an active role in raising the child. No immediate word from Aiken's rep.
I am just shaking my head in disbelief....who knew he had it in him? Bad pun.

"Bambi", "Old Yeller", and now this.....

When I uploaded the picture for this post a few days ago, it was to share with you a special little occurrence here at our household. Now, the story has turned into a sad, Disney movie like tale, with a tragedy taking place.....

There are not many trees in our backyard because we are in a newer development, so when I made an unusual discovery a few weeks back, I giggled at the ingenuity of this little bird. You see, a sweet little sparrow decided to make do with what was around, and she built her nest in one of our lighted palm trees on our deck....

The cutest little nest....she actually used some shredded baby wipes that she stole from a box I had out on the patio. I used a step ladder to climb up and take a tour of the nest interior....really nice....and inside, I was tickled to see five little eggs! they were so cute and speckled....just like the little robin eggs I eat at Easter....bad analogy, but really they looked just like them!

We were thrilled with our new residents. I looked up info on the Internet about nests and baby birds. I was careful to follow the rules about not touching the nest or area around it. Kaelan and I cautiously climbed the ladder and gave a peek each day to check for changes, as the mama sparrow kept a watchful and proud eye on us from an above rafter. Even our neighbors came and payed homage to this blessed wonder of nature.

Soon, we had four of the cutest baby birds.....they would stick their little necks up each time we made a clicking sound near the nest....just precious!

On Saturday night, we were set to host neighborhood "LUAU" and we were prepared to take necessary precautions to protect our little nest from visiting guests (specifically kiddos). We had decided to leave the tree unlit, and to put up a little barrier before the event.....mama sparrow would stay close by and wait out the crowd before returning to her babies. Best layed plans.....

Early Saturday morning, I stepped out the back door to move some chairs in preperation for the party. Immediately after walking out the door, I heard a screeching cry and heard the mad flutter of wings. The mama bird was flying around like crazy making loud noises. I figured I must have startled her, so I just muttered a "sorry" and went about my business. After a couple of minutes with more swooping a squawks, I turned to see what was up with this bird, and that is when I saw it........the nest, or what was left of it, was strown across the edge of the deck. There is no picture here.....too graphic.

I felt like I was living some animated feature..I totally hate "Bambi".....I never got over that part when mama dies. "Old Yeller", "Where the Red Fern Grows", "Finding Nemo", "The Lion King"???? Come on, can't I just watch a kid movie with out someone or something dying?

This whole bird/nest incident hit me hard....I bawled like a baby all morning. I found myself giving my sweet kitty the stink eye simply for being among a bird murdering species. Don't worry, she didn't do it. The evidence (and fur near the crime scene) pointed to a possum that has been coming in our yard...further substantiated by his visit late Saturday night after the luau. I watched through the window as he climbed up on the deck...up to the ledge.....right near where my precious nest USED to be. I ran outside yelling like a crazy lady.....I wanted to avenge my precious birdies. I doubt he will come back.

As for mama bird? She stayed around the neighborhood most of the weekend, occasionally swooping in to land where her babies used to be anxiously awaiting her. So, so sad.....I can only hope there is a happy ending for her out there somewhere.......

And God created the great sea-monsters, and every living creature that moveth, wherewith the waters swarmed, after their kind, and every winged bird after its kind: and God saw that it was good
